Taguig City urban poor community opposes demolition threat

,

Residents of Panday Creekside, Barangay Palingon-Tipas, Taguig City protested at the Taguig City Hall on February 23 to oppose the planned demolition of their community. They called on the local government to respect their right to secure housing in Panday Creekside.

Panday Creekside Urban Poor Inc. (PCUPI) residents and members gathered a day earlier to strengthen anti-demolition unity and determination. Youth and Anakbayan Taguig led a mural painting on February 20–21 as a form of defense of the community’s rights.

These activities followed a “consultation meeting” called on February 19 by the Sheriff of Regional Trial Court Branch 266 and the Taguig City Urban Poor Affairs Office. This supposed venue for residents to raise their concerns turned into a notice of the impending demolition.

Officials informed residents that they had only 30 days to vacate the area, offering compensation ranging from ₱30,000 to ₱41,000. The demolition team and the sheriff conducted rounds after the meeting, pressuring residents to self-demolish in exchange for cash.

The scheduled demolition will displace nearly 200 homes of sharers, tenants, and other residents.

The land claim in Panday Creekside first surfaced in 2011 when a certain Jaime Lontoc asserted ownership. Two years later, Monocrete Construction Company (MCC) also appeared claiming rights to the same land.

MCC spearheaded a demolition attempt in the community in 2015, which residents successfully resisted.

Amid the renewed demolition threat, residents urged Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano to heed their demands and stop the destruction of their community.
