Union wins reinstatement of 2 union leaders fired by Nexperia
Workers and the Nexperia Philippines Inc. Workers Union (NPIWU-NAFLU-KMU) has compelled Nexperia management to reinstate two union leaders dismissed in 2024. The union’s vice president Antonio Fajardo and Shop Steward Council member Marvel Marquez were officially reinstated on March 9.
The two were among four union officers simultaneously fired on December 17, 2024. The union denounced the capitalist’s retaliatory dismissal after workers filed a “notice of strike” on December 10, 2024, following a year-long delay and deadlock in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Workers called the dismissals outright union busting.
The capitalist accused workers of “blocking” company goods from entering or leaving the plant as the pretext to fire them. In truth, the officials were merely updating members on issues related to the CBA during the period cited by Nexperia.
The four union leaders’ termination formed the grounds for the Nexperia workers’ strike in March 2025. The 74-hour strike (March 5–8, 2025) won the reinstatement of the union president and another leader, as well as wage increases and other labor rights in the CBA talks.
According to NPIWU, their struggle for reinstatement proved that the workers’ strong unity is their most powerful weapon to defend and win labor rights. “The reinstatement of Tonyo and Marvel is a concrete result of collective struggle,” the union declared.
However, the union said their fight for labor rights is not over, as the 2024–2026 CBA remains unsigned. It also condemned ongoing dismissals and the intensification of labor flexibilization.
The union is now preparing for new negotiations for the 2027–2029 CBA. “Let us draw lessons from the victory of our strike,” it stated.
