UP Diliman students subpoena Marcos, Duterte and other corrupt officials
University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman students issued a “subpoena” against Ferdinand Marcos Jr, Sara Duterte, and all corrupt and fascist officials to hold them accountable for corruption, police brutality, and the intimidation of the youth. The students presented the “subpoena” during a rally on campus, followed by a march to Philcoa along Commonwealth Avenue on October 24.
They released the “subpoena” in response to the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) issuing subpoenas to UP Diliman University Student Council Chairperson Joaquin Buenaflor and other youth leaders. The Marcos regime persecuted them for participating in and leading anti-corruption walkouts and youth demonstrations.
The PNP-CIDG “summoned” at least four youth leaders for “investigation.” These include two student leaders from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and a De La Salle-College of St. Benilde student-organizer of Kalayaan Kontra Korapsyon. They defied appearing before the police.
“By virtue of the authority vested in the Filipino People…you are hereby directed to appear before the Supreme Court of the People—the streets that stand as the tribunal of truth—to answer for and be held accountable for your regime’s acts of corruption and fascism, and to face the judgment of the masses who seek to remove you from your office,” the students’ “subpoena” stated.
It further stated that if Marcos, Duterte, and those involved in corruption and fascism fail to respond to the Filipino people, they may face intensified demonstrations and continuous protest actions. No fewer than 43 campus councils and organizations, led by the UP Diliman USC, signed the “subpoena.”
The October 24 protest of students and groups from UP Diliman was also linked with progressive groups’ weekly Black Friday Protest.
