Peasant month commemorated

Peasant groups and their supporters launched a series of protests commemorating the Peasant Month. Hundreds of farmers from Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Tarlac, Bulacan, Pampanga, Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, Masbate and Negros Occidental marched to Mendiola in Manila on October 20, in what they called Day of Protest against Landgrabbing, Injustice and Hunger.

On October 16, they marked World Hunger Day by staging a protest in front of the Department of Agriculture. They lambasted Marcos’ lie that farmgate prices of rice have risen to ₱24 per kilo. They said the selling price of rice in the fields is only ₱18-₱20, and expressed fear that it will drop to₱12 per kilo during peak of the harvest season.

Peasant women meanwhile commemorated the International Rural Women’s Day on October 15 in a protest against landlessness, hunger and militarization.
