Anakbayan condemns looming mass layoff of Move It riders

Up to 14,000 motorcycle drivers are at risk of losing their jobs after the Land Transportation and Regulatory Board issued a decision to impose a “rider cap” or limit on the number of riders for the company Move It. The company is one of the motorcycle taxi services operating in Metro Manila.

Anakbayan denounced the decision and condemned the state for its lack of plans to secure the jobs of workers against sudden loss of livelihood.

“This is another instance where Marcos Jr chose the interests of big corporations over the welfare of the working class,” the group said. “The lack of job opportunities and adequate wages clearly proves how the government disregards Filipino workers.”

The emergence of motorcycle taxi services such as Move It reflects a broader deficiency in the transportation sector, according to the group. The lack of regular jobs in the country drives the Filipino workers’ increasing reliance on informal jobs, such as being riders.

“Instead of investing in local agriculture and industries that can provide stable jobs, the government pushes workers into irregular jobs,” the group said.
