Groups condemn Myanmar military junta for bombing amid earthquake tragedy

,

International human rights groups strongly condemned the Myanmar military junta for its relentless bombing amid the earthquake tragedy affecting its people. The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck on March 28, causing widespread damage in the country. The most affected regions are Mandalay, Sagaing, Magwe, Bago, and Naypyitaw, as well as northeastern Shan State.

More than 2,000 bodies have been recovered from collapsed buildings, and the number of missing persons is yet unknown. Many areas are still in urgent need of assistance.

Despite this, the junta’s bombing continues unabated in Mandalay, Sagaing, and Shan State—regions where armed resistance against the junta is strong. One of the worst aerial bombings occurred in Naungcho town in northern Shan, hours after the earthquake, killing seven members of the Danu People’s Liberation Army, an armed group of the indigenous Danu people.

UN Special Rapporteur for Myanmar Tom Andrews expressed outrage that Tatmadaw prioritizes bombing over rescue operations. He urged Tatmadaw to immediately halt its military operations.

Many humanitarian groups are also concerned that tje Tatmadaw will exploit the humanitarian aid pouring into the country to pressure people in areas with intense resistance.

Meanwhile, The various indigenous peoples armed groups immediately declared a two-week ceasefire to allow rescue operations and aid delivery to affected residents.
