Groups protest to hold the Dutertes and Marcoses accountable
Various democratic groups gathered at Liwasang Bonifacio on January 31 to hold protests against the “3K” or the Kilos Bayan against poverty, corruption and lack of accountability. Students, teachers, workers, professionals and progressive parties participated in the protest led by Bayan and its allied organizations.
From Taft Avenue, students and teachers of St. Scholastica University, St. Paul University, Adamson University, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines-Manila and others under the One Taft alliance to hold the Dutertes accountable for their crimes against the people and the charging of the Marcos regime for its inutility.
The protest demanded that the impeachment case against Sara Duterte push through. Three complaints against the vice president have been filed in Congress since more than a month, but has hit obstacles due to Marcos’ opposition.
“It seems that the impeachment complaints of the people against VP Sara Duterte is being held hostage in the lower house, despite its clear and strong basis,” Makabayan Coalition president and senatorial candidate Liza Maza said in her speech. The issue of impeachmet is a matter of justice, she said.
“It is time for Rodrigo Duterte to be held accountable for heinous crimes and human rights violations during his leadership,” stated the Kilusang Mayo Uno. They joined the call against poverty, corruption and lack of accountability.
“The 200 pesos wage increase? (This is) far from enough to address the ever-increasing commodity prices,” according to the group. We need a 1,200 pesos family living wage increase just to hurdle over the severe economic crisis, he said.
The KMU, along with other organizations of the toiling masses, also called for the urgency of lowering the price of goods and utility services charges.
On the same day, two more protests were launched, both in front of the People Power Monument on EDSA. Like the protest in Liwasan, these two other protests strongly condemned Sara Duterte for squandering public funds and her conduct in Congress hearings and even in public.
