Moros sail to Gaza as part of Sumud Nusantara Flotilla
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) from Asia, Tunisia, and various Mediterranean ports plans to sail to Gaza this August through September. It aims to establish a humanitarian sea corridor, a safe passage for delivering humanitarian aid and support by sea to Gaza.
This action is a response to the worsening widespread hunger and disease in Gaza caused by Zionist Israeli state’s nearly three years of heightened genocide in Palestinian territories. It also seeks worldwide focus on the ongoing brutal US-Israel genocide against the Palestinian people. More than 44 countries plan to participate in what is considered the largest flotilla in the history of the global movement for Gaza.
In Asia, at least 10 Moro activists plan to join the flotilla which will sail on August 23. Called the Sumud Nusantara Asian Flotilla, the delegation will include citizens from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. MyAqsa Defenders and Cinta Gaza from Malaysia will lead the delegation, supported by the Aqsa Working Group and other organizations in Indonesia.
Seven ships bearing food, medical supplies, and other basic necessities are expected to sail from Malaysia on August 23. The passengers include Moro leaders, media workers, and influencers to further amplify the call for justice for the Palestinian people.
Sumud Nusantara states that the flotilla serves not only as a conduit for aid but also as a symbol of people’s unity to challenge the nearly 18-year US imposed blockade on Gaza. Participants stand ready to face threats of violence and legal repression during the course of their mission.
GSF was formed in July 2025 to consolidate the efforts of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, Global Movement to Gaza, Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, and now the Sumud Nusantara Asian Flotilla.
Beyond delivering aid, the flotilla supports freedom, dignity, and the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people. More than 6,000 activists, including doctors, lawyers, journalists, and human rights defenders, have expressed support and plan to join the initiative.
In Arabic, the word sumud means “steadfastness,” a fundamental characteristic of Palestinian identity and resistance.
