NPA sanctions exploitative agricultural company in Negros Island

The New People’s Army (NPA)-South Central Negros (Romeo Nanta Command) carried out an armed action against W.D. Anglo Agri Farm, an abusive agricultural company in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on March 8. The company is owned by Wilfred D. Anglo and is located in Hacienda Baling, Barangay Libacao.

The NPA-South Central Negros unit disabled and burned the company’s three tractors, one crane, and one backhoe. The total damage to the paralyzed production equipment was estimated at ₱30–₱40 million.

The people’s army unit spokesperson Ka Dionesio Magbuelas said the NPA enforced the sanction because of the company’s long record of abuses and exploitation of farmworkers. He said the workers receive extremely low pay while Anglo lives in luxury.

The company’s workers are under a piece-rate system. They are paid only ₱2,400 per hectare for weeding, ₱930 per ten thousand sugarcane cuttings planted, ₱220 per ton for harvesting, and ₱3 per stack.

Magbuelas said the minimum daily wage of agricultural workers in Negros Occidental (₱520) and Negros Oriental (₱500) is already far below a living standard and Anglo’s pay is even lower. He added that Anglo’s wage scheme represents the height of feudal cruelty that drives farmworkers deeper into systematic hunger.

Anglo also buries the farmworkers in multi-layered debt by charging a 10% weekly interest on the money they borrow. Magbuelas called Anglo a “predatory usurer” for the exorbitant interest rates he imposes.

The NPA-South Central Negros carried out the sanction in accordance with the implementation of the Revolutionary Guide for Land Reform (RGLR), the program of the Communist Party of the Philippines and the peasant revolutionary movement in the countryside.

Magbuelas said the sanction clearly warns comprador bourgeois and despotic landgrabbers in Negros. “As long as the very hands that feed the nation continue to starve, every Red fighter will persist to dismantle the semi-feudal and semi-colonial system in the country,” he said.
