Peasant women condemn Cynthia Villar for offering land in exchange for votes

, ,

The Amihan National Federation of Peasant Women condemned Senator Cynthia Villar’s statement in a viral video on social media where she said she would “distribute” land owned by her family if the residents of Las Piñas City would vote for her in the upcoming elections. The senator is running for city representative, replacing her daughter who is running for senator in 2025.

“The election results will measure your gratitude for our land grants,” Villar said in the video. The notorious land grabbing family also threatened, “We hope you can show your support in the upcoming 2025 election… otherwise, we may change our minds about granting you land.” The land in question has residential and commercial structures.

Villar’s opponent in the congressional race is Las Piñas Councilor Mark Anthony Santos who has the support of other Aguilar political dynasty members.

“Villar’s remarks tying land distribution to electoral loyalty insults the dignity of farmers—especially women—who labor tirelessly to feed the nation,” Amihan secretary general and Gabriela Women’s Party second nominee Cathy Estavillo said in a statement on December 29.

Estavillo added that Villar’s claim of “utang na loob” (debt of gratitude) clouds the truth that farmers have long paid the land with their sweat and suffering “while landlords like the Villars profit from their displacement,” she said.

Villar’s statements also clearly exposed the feudal mindset that treats land as a privilege, not a right owed to the generations who cultivate it. “She has only proven that she is unfit to be a government official,” Estavillo quipped.

In an earlier statement, Kabataan Party-list Representative Raoul Manuel denounced Villar’s statements. Makabayan Coalition leader Rep. Manuel, said “this is unbecoming of a public official.”

“New year nears but expect nothing from political dynasties!” said the youth representative in Congress. The Makabayan Coalition is pushing for the dismantling of political dynasties in government and vowed to fight this in the upcoming 2025 elections.
