Philippine fisherfolk group joins global movement
The Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) participated in a global fisherfolk movement in Brasília, Brazil, on November 21, in observance of World Fisheries Day. The event was led by the World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP), which includes 29 organizations from 23 countries.
The WFFP event emphasized the need to support small-scale fishing to ensure food sovereignty, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability. They called for systematic changes in the global food system, reversing the dominant capitalist model of economic expansion and urging governments to recognize the collective rights of small-scale fisherfolk.
Pamalakaya representatives highlighted the issues faced by Philippine fisherfolk, including the repressive Fisheries Code (Republic Act 10654), policies favoring liberalization and imports, destructive reclamation projects, and the militarization of the West Philippine Sea.
The mobilization also marked the 8th General Assembly of the WFFP, held from November 15-21. The organizations under the WFFP reinforced their solidarity in defending the rights of fishers.
