Residents successfully stop mining in Abra
The people’s collective action in Abra successfully stopped the mining exploration project of Yamang Mineral Corporation in the municipalities of Sallapadan, Lacub, Malibcong, and Licuan-Baay.
The company had already geared for exploration since October last year, but indigenous peoples’ strong opposition forced the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP)-Cordillera to halt the activity. It was also revealed that the company did not have Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) from the Tingguian communities.
On September 10, the NCIP-Cordillera issued a cease order and suspended the company’s operations in Licuan-Baay until it secures permission from the indigenous peoples.
The Masadiit tribe strongly opposed the company’s mining plan. The Diocese of Bangued also expressed condemnation. In July, the National Anti-Poverty Commission called for the cancellation of YMC’s permit because it lacked the required FPIC.
Yamang Mineral Corporation is owned by Metals Exploration PLC, a London-based company. This firm also owns Woggle Corporation, which currently has a disputed mineral exploration project in Dupax del Norte, Nueva Viscaya.
