Stop destructive quarrying in Romblon
The Free Romblon 4 Network strongly condemned the ongoing mining operations on Sibuyan Island, Romblon after reports exposed that a mining company in Barangay España, San Fernando has been operating continuously, resulting in severe damage to the mountains and deforestation in the area.
“The tailings (waste) and chemicals from the ongoing massive operations of mining companies have severely harmed the neighboring coastlines in Sityo Bato,” according to the group’s statement. “These are killing marine life, including fish. In Sityo Cantigas, there are fears of impending pollution and drying up of the Cantigas River, which serves as a farm water source and is a popular tourist destination.”
Just on September 22, over a thousand Sibuyanons gathered again to protest against mining in San Fernando. This is part of the ongoing resistance of island residents against destructive mining activities of Altai Philippines Mining Corporation, owned by the Gatchalian family. Residents from the barangays of Agtiwa, Mabini, Mabolo, España, Taclobo, Azagra, and Pili in San Fernando attended the protest.
The Free Romblon 4 Network is a coalition of groups and individuals calling for the release of environmental activists currently detained in Romblon. Activists Teresa Dioquino and Marlon Torres, and fisherfolk and labor advocates Benny Hilamon and Nolan Ramos were arrested on June 3, 2021, for their opposition to mining in Romblon.
They were initially charged with violating the COVID-19 quarantine protocols, and later with trumped-up charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives. They continue to languish in detention due to their trial’s slow pace.
