Tension persists among AFP factions
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) senior officer Col. Audie A. Mongao’s post condemning the Marcos regime’s corruption went “viral.”
Mongao’s post said Ferdinand Marcos Jr had already lost “moral ascendancy” to lead the AFP as its commander and to govern the Filipino people. He called out, “Enough is enough!”, signifying his withdrawal of support for the president.
Mongao, O-10933 INF (MNSA) PA, is the current Director of the Training Development Center under the AFP Training Command (TRACOM). His appeal went viral after Ret. Air Force Maj. Gen. Romeo Poquiz reposted it on January 8. Poquiz is one of the founders of the United People’s Initiative, an organization of retired military officers allied with the Duterte family.
On September 21, 2025, UPI held a rally near Camp Crame to urge active generals to “withdraw” their support for Marcos Jr. On January 5, the regime arrested Poquiz on charges of inciting to sedition. He immediately posted bail and was released.
Meanwhile, the AFP has already removed and is pursuing Col. Mongao. It has also launched an investigation against him.
The sudden and viral nature of Mongao’s post prove the unresolved discord among factions within the AFP controlled by the rival Marcos and Duterte camps. Periodic flare-ups of this conflict occur despite repeated AFP leadership’s assertions that it firmly “abides by the Constitution and the chain of command.”
