,

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) successfully held its 7th international assembly from June 21 to 24 in Malaysia. The organization issued a communique on July 11 stating that 535 individuals from 44 countries attended the assembly. The 432 delegates were from 192 ILPS member organizations while 103 were guests and observers.

The assembly, the largest in the league’s history, is a reflection of the strong effects of the imperialist economic, political, military and climate crises around the world and the determination of the people to unite and fight for a better world.

The assembly honored Comrade Jose Maria Sison, chairman emeritus of the league. This is the first international assembly launched since his passing. Ka Julie de Lima gave a speech regarding his legacy.

Leila Khaled, known Palestinian fighter from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, gave the keynote address about the importance of the revolutionary struggle of the Palestinian people against the US-Zionist aggression and occupation and also the importance of international solidarity of the people who fight.

The assembly’s other speakers focused on four issues the league is closely: national liberation, socio-economic development, democracy in the fight against fascism, and just peace in the struggle against wars of aggression.

Those who discussed it were Coni Ledesma of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines for the liberation movement in the Philippines; Sheryl Cadman from First Union in Aotearoa (New Zealand) in relation to the struggles of migrant workers; Jerome Adonis from Kilusang Mayo Uno in relation to labor struggles; Engr. Hassan Al Jaja from the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature and Hakan Cifci from the Kurdistan National Congress in relation to the fascism of the US-Zionist regime and the fascism of the Erdogan regime in Turkey; Ludo de Brabander from Vrede in Belgium on the role of NATO and US-led military alliances; and finally the Korean Committee for the Solidarity of the World’s People of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea which sent a message regarding the war instigated by the US on the Korean peninsula.

The delegates had discussions and exchanged experiences that became the basis for issuing the General Declaration of the seventh assembly. The league also elected new officers. Len Cooper from Australia was re-elected as its leader and Azra Sayeed was elected as its new general secretary.

The assembly gathered under the theme “Defeat imperialism! Win our socialist future! Build a united people’s front to resist imperialist plunder, war and fascism! Encourage more organizations and movements in the ILPS to struggle for a socialist future for humanity and planet!” The 3-day gathering was fueled by lively discussions, special activities and cultural performances.
