Gabriela Women's Party picks young woman, farmer and doctor as leading nominees
The Gabriela Women’s Party (GWP) announced today at its 9th convention in Marikina City the nominees for the 2025 party list elections. The party said they will continue to promote the well-being of women, children and the people in their campaign to maintain its presence in congress.
Present at the congress were various women’s organizations such as Gabriela, Lila Pilipina, Amihan Peasant Women, and Kilusan ng Manggagwang Kababaihan. Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap, Divorce for the Philippines Now, Union of Solo Parents, organizations that promote children’s rights and others.
Sarah Elago, GWP’s current consultant on issues regarding young women and former Kabataan Partylist representative in the 17th and 18th Congress, will serve as the party’s first nominee. During her six years in congress, she filed more than 700 bills that promoted the well-being of youth, women and the common citizen.
Among her proposed legislation were the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act and the Anti-OSAEC Act, which strengthened protections against online abuse of young people.
Peasant-leader Cathy Estavillo is the second GWP nominee. Estavillo is currently Bantay Bigas’ spokesperson and Amihan Peasant Women secretary general. She will highlight the issues and rights of women farmers for land, fair prices and others.
Dr. Jean Lindo, a doctor based in Davao City, will serve as the third nominee. Dr. Lindo mainly emphasized and promoted the right to health of women, children and the common citizen.
Its other nominees are Jacqueline Raquiz of Kilusang Manggagawa ng Kababaihan, peasant-leader Miriam Villanueva of Southern Tagalog, Jen Nagrampa of Bicol, Lucia Franciso from Panay, Emerlina de Lina from migrant women, farmer-leader Jacqueline Ratin from Cagayan Valley, and Prof. Leni Occaciones from Cebu City.
Amihan Peasant Women said it believe that the GWP will bring inside and outside congress the agenda of rural women for the right to land, food and against abuse and discrimination. It added the GWP is far different from political dynasties, traditional politicians, representatives of landlords and hacienderos who preserve their own selfish interests.
The GWP also formally declared their support for the 11 senatorial candidates of the Koalisyong Makabayan, which includes their current congressional representative, Rep. Arlene Brosas and their first representative in congress, Rep. Liza Maza.
