Group plans lawsuit against trolls vilifying drug war victims’ kin
On February 27, Duterte Panagutin Europe announced its plan to file cases against individuals in the Netherlands and the Philippines who harass and slander online and in person the relatives of victims of the drug war and their lawyers.
On February 22, Rodrigo Duterte’s supporters bullied the victims’ families and accused them of “supporting drug addicts.” They also secretly took videos of members of the group without permission and posted malicious and defamatory content on social media. Duterte supporter Cathy Binag edited a photo of the victims’ relatives to make it appear they owned expensive bags. Meanwhile, pro-Duterte netizens filmed Sheera Escudero and Llore Pasco, relatives of victims, without their consent while they were traveling on February 24, then spread the footage online to malign them.
The group appealed to fellow Filipinos to respect their privacy and stop the relentless targeting of the victims.
“They have suffered enough. And as supporters of the victims, we will hold the line,” the group said.
According to the group, the attacks and harassment by Duterte supporters violate the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Algemene Verordening Gegevensbescherming (AVG) in the Netherlands. Because of this, the group plans to file cyberbullying charges under the Cybercrime Prevention Act and is preparing to submit a formal police complaint against the individuals involved in the defamation.
In addition, the group plans to file a complaint with Meta to demand removing the posts and, if necessary, deleting the offending pages and profiles.
