Elderly and cyclists launch anti-corruption protest

Groups of the elderly and cyclists launched separate activities on November 22 to protest the Marcos regime’s rampant corruption. Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot (KBKK, or People’s Movement Against Corruption) organizations led the actions.

In Quezon City, members of Seniors Kontra Kurakot (Seniors Against Corruption) held protests at two malls in Cubao. Wearing black t-shirts with slogans, the elderly marched together in their second “mall walk.” They also shouted and called to imprison all the corrupt.

Protest participant Candy Yuzon said they are compelled to act despite being elderly because of the systemic corruption they see in the government. “What will our legacy be to our children and grandchildren? A rotten system where stealing is normal?” she said.

Yuzon and her fellow elderly protesters hope the government will listen to them. She added that they are calling for someone to be held accountable and jailed before the year ends.

The Seniors Kontra Kurakot also expressed support for the call of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Vice President Sara Duterte to resign. “They are the number one culprits in the blatant and unparalleled corruption that oppresses the people,” the group said.

Meanwhile, cyclists pedalled together from Quezon City to Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila in their 25-kilometer “Padyak Kontra Kurakot” (Pedal Against Corruption). The groups, led by Panatang Luntian (Green Oath), held the activity to mark National Bike Day.

“This corruption spares no one—pedestrians, commuters, bikers, or runners. We are all taxpayers, everyone’s voices must be heard,” an activity organizer Jasper Abunyawan said.

The elderly people and cyclist groups will again join the large protest “Flood in Luneta 2.0” on November 30. KBKK will lead the mass action and call for accountability of all those involved in government corruption. Protests will also be held in other parts of the country.

“From the simple call to ‘hold the corrupt accountable’ to deeper demands for Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte to resign and change the rotten system of governance, every legitimate outcry of the people has space and must be heard,” KBKK stated regarding the protest.

The group added, “No censorship, no suppression of the grievances and clamor of the people. We will name those who must be named.” KBKK declared that their organization will launch continuous actions and activities in the coming days in preparation for the people’s protest on November 30.
