France's release of political prisoner Abdallah is the people's victory
Organizations under the International League of Peoples’ Struggles celebrated the release of Lebanese fighter Georges Ibrahim Abdallah from France’s prison. He belonged to both the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and Lebanese Revolutionary Armed Factions (LRAF). He was arrested in 1984 for his alleged involvement in killing US and Israeli agents in Paris. He was sentenced to life imprisonment that same year.
After the French reactionary state, colluding with the imperialist US and Zionist Israel, imprisoned him for 41 years, the people won his freedom through tireless and militant struggle for his rights and justice.
His freedom did not come as a gift from the oppressors. The International League of Peoples’ Struggles and ILPS People’s Rights Commission said on July 28 that the victory was wrested from the jaws of imperialist vengeance through decades of struggle, unity, and resistance.
Abdallah gained his freedom on July 25 when the Court of Appeals in Paris issued the final decision following the legal battles of his lawyers and supporters that lasted several decades.
ILPS stated that Georges Abdallah is not only a former political prisoner but also a living symbol of revolutionary resilience, unyielding patience, and principled commitment for the people’s rights to freedom, democracy, dignity, and national independence.
They freed Abdallah amid growing protests and worldwide condemnation against the escalating US and Israeli genocide in Gaza.
Upon his return to Lebanon, people welcomed him with “clenched fists and embraces,” red flags, Palestinian banners, and revolutionary songs.
ILPS called on all people to further strengthen the global struggle for the release of all political prisoners and to oppose imperialism in all its formms.
