Groups launch campaign to hold Duterte accountable in Germany
ALPAS Pilipinas, a community organization of Filipinos in Germany that promotes anti-imperialist struggle in the Philippines, spearheaded the launching of the online campaign Duterte Panagutin-Germany on June 29. Among the participants o the said campaign include Gabriela Germany, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan)-Europe, and Migrante Germany.
The campaign aims to hold former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte accountable for his crimes against humanity and to call for justice for his victims. The campaign also plans to disseminate information in Germany about Duterte’s crimes, such as the thousands of victims of extrajudicial killings in the name of the war on drugs and other human rights violations under his regime. The activity prepared for the next hearing of Duterte at the International Criminal Court on September 23.
Discussion participants included lawyer for several victims and accredited ICC Assistant to Counsel Kristina Conti; sister of a victim of the war on drugs Sheerah Escudero; and Rise Up for Life and for Rights coordinator Rubilyn Litao.
Before this activity, Duterte Panagutin Europe launched on March 28. An action also took place at Bradenburger Tor in Berlin, Germany, on March 23, with more than 100 Filipinos and allied organizations participating. Bayan Europe, ALPAS Pilipinas, Gabriela Germany, Migrante Germany, and ICHRP Germany (International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines) led the event.
The activity celebrated the arrest and detention of Duterte at the ICC and called for justice and accountability for his crimes. The groups also called for an end to the ongoing political persecution of critics under the US-Marcos regime. Allied organizations participated to express their support for holding Duterte accountable, including Cênî (Kurdish Women’s Office for Peace), Korea Verband, Extinction Rebellion Berlin, Congo Basin Alliance, FKO (Föderation Klassenkämpferischer Organisationen), Ararat Kollectiv, RESBAK (Respond and Break the Silence Against the Killings), and Abolish Frontex.
