30,000 protest on May Day

,

More than 30,000 Filipinos took to the streets nationwide and overseas in protests and actions on May 1, International Workers’ Day. They militantly asserted their demand for wage increases, lower prices of oil and basic commodities, and an end to the US-Israel war of aggression against Iran.

Thousands of workers and toiling people in Manila marched to Mendiola. The National Wage Coalition led the action, composed of Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino, Nagkaisa Labor Coalition, and Trade Union Congress of the Philippines. The Labor Consultative Assembly, formed by Caritas Philippines, Laban Manggagawa, and other groups, also joined the march. Thousands of police surrounded Malacañang, forcing workers to hold their program at the intersection of Nicanor Reyes and Recto Avenue. The KMU then led a march to the US embassy. They called for an immediate end to the US-Israel war of aggression against Iran, which is causing an unprecedented crisis in the Philippines and worldwide.

KMU led actions outside Metro Manila in the cities of Baguio, Angeles, Calamba, Legazpi, Tacloban, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, and Davao, and in town centers in Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Cavite, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo City, and Dinagat Islands. Overseas, Migrante led protests of Filipino migrant workers in seven cities in the US, Canada, United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan.
