Makabayan Coalition post-2025 elections: "The struggle continues"

,

A day after elections on May 12, the Makabayan Coalition expressed gratitude to all supporters, campaigners, and those who voted for its 11 senatorial candidates and four party-list groups. The coalition assured that it will continue the struggle for the democratic rights of the Filipino people even after the campaign and elections.

The Commission on Elections’ latest record shows that Makabayan’s senatorial candidates received between half a million and 4.64 million votes. Meanwhile, Makabayan’s four party-list groups–ACT Teachers, Kabataan, Gabriela Women’s Party, and Bayan Muna–garnered a total of 1.08 million votes.

The parties Kabataan and ACT Teachers are certain to return to Congress, while Gabriela is at risk of not securing a seat. Bayan Muna will not be able to take a seat for the second time since failing to enter in 2022.

“To the millions of citizens who voted and stood for the whole Makabayan, our heartfelt thanks to you!” said Liza Maza, president of Makabayan and senatorial candidate. She added that the votes and support of the Filipino people are not just numbers that will remain on the ballot, but a testament to the defiance against the rotten system that has long plagued our nation.

This represents Filipino workers fighting for higher wages and decent jobs, farmers standing up for their right to land, youth aspiring for a just and free future, women, OFWs, LGBT, the poor, and indigenous peoples who will never yield to any form of exploitation. “You prove that Filipinos fight and embrace the platform of Makabayan,” Maza said.

The coalition president further stated, “in the 2025 elections, we had the opportunity to strengthen the call for national democracy–the Makabayan program for immediate relief, freedom with justice, and democracy.” She promised the Filipino masses that Makabayan will remain on their side and will relentlessly fight fascism, hunger, poverty, foreign control, and the corrupt political dynasties that every year milk ordinary Filipinos through deception.

Makabayan managed to launch a national campaign and gather millions of votes despite sustained and coordinated attacks from state forces, relentless Red-tagging and repression, disinformation campaigns, and blatant fraud in the 2025 elections using automated machines.

Kabataan Party-list first nominee Atty. Renee Co said “no other political party today had to endure the attacks that Makabayan and its party-list groups faced. The regime tried to wipe out Makabayan in the electoral arena but it failed.” She added that this proves the strength and defiance of the Filipino people.

Meanwhile, Gabriela Women’s Party first nominee Sarah Elago stated that they will continue to fight for the return of the Filipino women’s party to Congress. “As abuses increase, women, children, LGBTQ+, and the nation need Gabriela in Congress even more,” she said.

Although defeated, Bayan Muna declared that it will not be deterred and its party will never fall silent. “Our commitment to serve the Filipino people will continue–whether inside or outside Congress. The struggle for land, wages, rights, and justice is not confined to parliament,” it stated.
