Nexperia Philippines Inc. Workers’ Union (NPIWU-National Federation of Labor Unions-Kilusang Mayo Uno) condemned the company management for its pressure and intimidation tactics amid the workers’ imminent strike. The union reported that management has been spreading the rumor that the company will consider strikers on AWOL (absent without leave) and will withhold benefits to anyone who will participate in the strike.

The company is also spreading word that it will double the wages of scabs. They will be given a special identification card (ID) during this time.

“These schemes are harassment, intimidation, insults and deception tactics. These sow fear and confusion in our ranks to prevent our fight to protect their profits,” NPIWU-NAFLU-KMU said.

A large majority, 1,248 members, of union members voted in favor of the strike last July 29-30 in Cabuyao, Laguna. The strike vote proceeded smoothly on those days after being delayed from July 17-18 due to the management’s blatant interference. The union filed their Notice of Strike on June 26.

The union clarified that the company does not any legal leg to stand on in imposing an “AWOL” status on workers who will participate in the strike. “Remember that we have complied with all the ‘requirements’ to strike,” the NPIWU stressed. This is despite the workers’ long-standing view that even the very law for striking, filing notices, etc, hinder the right to strike.

“What is illegal is management’s harassment and intimidation. In addition to their continued operations during the strike and double payment is another violation of the STRIKE BREAKER LAW,” the union said.

The NPIWU has challenged its fellow workers to brace themselves against intimidation and deception amid the imminent outbreak of a strike. “We need to be vigilant and proactive in reporting this kind of tactics to union officials so that we can clarify the truth,” the union said.

It said workers should know their fight for the strike is just. “It is just to fight for job security! We went on strike because management disregards our call!” it emphasized.
