NPA launch harassment operations against 2nd IB troopers in Masbate

The 2nd IB soldiers resting in a compound in Barangay Puro, Placer, Masbate scampered after the New People’s Army (NPA)-Masbate’s attack on August 26 at 11 p.m. Red fighters opened fire and used command-detonated explosives against the 2nd IB Alpha Company unit in the area.

The NPA was unable to confirm the number of casualties on the military side. It reported that its own unit maneuvered safely.

“The successful harassment operation is a step towards achieving justice for the victims of military abuse in Masbate,” Ka Luz del Mar, spokesperson of the provincial People’s Army units, said.

The spokesperson emphasized that they carefully carried out the armed action. “NPA-Masbate mainly ensured the welfare of civilians in the action in accordance with international humanitarian law,” she said.

Ka Luz added that Masbatenyos expressed their joy at the initial punishment the people’s army meted against the criminal 2nd IB Alpha Company. The company is involved in multiple crimes against the farmers and residents especially in Cataingan, Placer, Esperanza and Pio V. Corpus. They also serve as staff and thugs of Masbate Gov. Antonio T. Kho to protect his seized lands.

Among the crimes committed by the said unit is the murder of young brothers Ronel and Robert Monsanto on July 8 in Barangay Aguho, town of Esperanza.

Under the Marcos regime, Ang Bayan recorded 117 cases of human rights violations in which nearly 2,000 people were victims. These violations, mainly perpetrated by the 2nd IB, killed at least 30.

“May this guerrilla action launched by the NPA-Masbate serve as an inspiration so that the people of Masbate can strengthen their unity and determination to face and fight the ongoing military rule in the province,” Ka Luz said.

She condemned the 2nd IB for indiscriminately shooting out of fear. She added that the military is currently imposing a news blackout and economic blockade in Barangay Puro to cover up their casualties.
