Anti-corruption protest set on February 25

Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot (KBKK, or People’s Anti-Corruption Movement) announced on January 19 its relaunching of the large-scale anti-corruption protest on February 25, with the marking of the 40th EDSA People Power uprising anniversary. The group led 100,000 people in anti-corruption protests on September 21, 2025 and 20,000 on November 30, 2025 in Luneta Park, Manila.

KBKK’s announcement said it will march with different sectors and groups that actively participated in the country’s anti-corruption movement. These include Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), youth-student groups and councils that led the big walkouts in the latter part of 2025, workers and urban poor, women, teachers, health workers, the elderly, and others.

They said that despite sustained protests from groups and the public on the Marcos regime, only a few have been held accountable and not a single corrupt “big fish” or bigwig has been jailed. They also denounced the regime for railroading the 2026 national budget enactment, which remains packed with pork barrel and other insertions. They also said their protest is primarily based on the congressional committee’s junking of the impeachment complaint against Marcos.

Supression and repression. KBKK also condemned the Marcos regime for supressing and repressing those who oppose corruption. The Philippine National Police (PNP) filed complaints at the Department of Justice (DOJ) against no less than 72 individuals for sedition and inciting to sedition in relation to the Anti-Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Those the PNP charged at the DOJ include Bayan president Renato Reyes Jr, and student leaders from student councils, publications and progressive groups, namely Tiffany Faith Brillante, Joaquin Buenaflor, Jacob Baluyot, and Aldrin Kitsune. They were targeted for their participation in the “Baha sa Luneta” (Luneta Flood) protest on September 21, 2025 and for their social media posts expressing firm anti-corruption stands.

Progressive groups protested the PNP and the Marcos regime’s harassment. They demanded the immediate dismissal of the complaints. They said prosecution and imprisonment must target crooks in government, not those who oppose corruption.
