Filipino migrants demand investigation of US and Taiwan ghost projects

,

Filipino migrants are demanding an investigation into the various ghost or fake projects of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in the US and Taiwan.

According to the DMW, it allots ₱5 million every year for migrant shelters or temporary housing which it co-manages with non-governmental organizations in Taiwan. But Filipino-American missionary and Bahay Ugnayan shelter operator Father Joy Tajonera said they have not received any subsidy from the Manila Economic and Cultural Office since 2022.

The priest also uncovered that the agency allotted ₱2.9 million for a currently closed “MWO shelter” in Taipei.

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-USA Washington condemned the DFA ghost project that is the supposed Philippine Consulate in Washington DC. Despite the allocated funds of ₱83.73 million for 2025 and ₱88.9 million for 2026, the consulate remains non-existent for Filipinos in the US and its funds unaccounted. The group also questioned where the ₱9.8 billion DFA Assistance to Nationals funds for 2025 are going. The agency provides almost no services to Filipinos in need, especially those detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
