Workers’ struggle for CBA and other rights

,

Workers and their unions launched successive protests and assemblies in Quezon City, Cavite, and Laguna to demand respect for their collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and other labor rights.

In Quezon City, the Glowhrain-KMU-Kowloon House West Chapter Union filed a Notice of Strike on March 6 at the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to fight for the CBA and denounce the harassment cases against their union. They also protested at Kowloon House West on West Avenue, Quezon City on the same day.

They said the ₱10 daily wage increase offer by restaurant head Katipunan Food Services Inc. (KFSI) is unacceptable. The union initially demanded a ₱50 daily increase but compromised it to a lower ₱35. The workers also complained that the company failed to comply with the agreed wage increases from previous CBAs amounting to an estimated ₱5.5 million over three years.

The KFSI responded with a March 14 announcement that it no longer owns the restaurant. Another business name replaced the “Kowloon House” billboard mounted above the restaurant. The union fears the restaurant has been sold or transferred to another owner.

In Laguna, workers of PhilFoods Fresh Baked Products Inc., Gardenia Philippines, and Daiwa Seiko Philippines launched consecutive protests on March 7, 9, and 12. They marched within the Laguna International Industrial Park enclave in Barangay Mamplasan, Biñan. They condemned the capitalist PhilFoods for filing on March 4 an “insubordination” case against unionists. The case stemmed from the union’s protest demanding the company fulfill the CBA provisions on wages.

Meanwhile, two union leaders of Nexperia Philippines Inc. Workers Union (NPIWU-NAFLU-KMU) dismissed in 2024 were reinstated on March 9. The two were among four union leaders simultaneously terminated on December 17, 2024, in retaliation against the union. Their dismissal prompted the workers to launch a strike in March 2025.

In Cavite, the Samahan ng mga Manggagawa sa EMI-Independent is campaigning for workers to sign a Petition for Certification Election. The petition to DOLE seeks to elect which union will represent workers in CBA negotiations.

The workers and the company are currently within the “freedom period,” a 60-day window set for challenging or replacing the recognized bargaining union in CBA negotiations. The union experienced harassment while gathering signatures for the petition on February 19.
