NPA–South Central Negros sanctions agriculture company

,

The New People’s Army (NPA)–South Central Negros (Romeo Nanta Command) enforced the sanction of the people’s democratic government on W.D. Anglo Agri Farm, an abusive agriculture company in Negros Occidental, on March 8. Owned by Wilfred D. Anglo, the company is located in Hacienda Baling, Barangay Libacao, Himamaylan City. The NPA disabled and burned the company’s three tractors, a crane, and a backhoe, valued at an estimated ₱30–₱40 million.

The company’s workers are under a piece-rate system. They are paid only ₱2,400 per hectare for weeding, ₱930 per “laksa” (equivalent to 10,000 sugarcane stalks) of planting, ₱220 per ton for loading, and ₱3 per stack. These are far below the minimum daily wage for agricultural workers in Negros Occidental (₱520) and Negros Oriental (₱500), among the worse forms of feudal exploitation that drives farmworkers deeper into systemic starvation.

Anglo also buries farmworkers in overlapping debt by imposing a 10% weekly interest on borrowed cash.
