Anti-demolition struggle in Marikina. Residents of Agora Compound in Barangay Santo Niño, Marikina City reinstalled their protest camp on March 14 to block demolition of their community. They reiterated their demand for in-city relocation. The demolition will evict at least 145 families.
Growing market anti-privatization in Cebu. Groups, vendors, and residents at Carbon Market launched consecutive protests in Barangay Ermita, Cebu City from March 14–17 to junk the market’s privatization, which will disposses an estimated 16,000 vendors and workers of their stalls and jobs, and adversely affect 700 nearby houses in Sitio Bato.
Students thwart AFP recruitment in Ateneo. Ateneo de Manila University students forced the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) from the Ateneo Career Fair on March 13 following strong denouncement of its participation and record of human rights abuses. Students protested at the day of the career fair and took down the “AFP Recruitment Booth” poster.
Migrants demand immediate repatriation. Migrante groups protested in Mendiola, Manila on March 17 to demand the safe return of Filipino migrants caught in the wars in the Middle East. The protest also marked the 31st anniversary of the execution of Flor Contemplacion in 1995.
