Global protests erupt against Israel’s renewed assault on Gaza
Millions of people worldwide united in protest against the renewed wave of genocide in Gaza, which claimed the lives of nearly 600 Palestinians in just four days this May. They called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and demanded an end to the brutal attacks and bombings by Zionist Israel. The protests also coincided with the commemoration of the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, or The Catastrophe, the first time Zionists violently expelled Palestinians from their lands to establish the state of Israel.
In the Middle East, actions erupted in major Arab cities including Amman, Cairo, and Beirut. Thousands protested outside Israeli embassies and United Nations offices.
In Europe, hundreds of thousands marched through city centers in London, Paris, Berlin, and Madrid. Activists also held vigils outside Israeli embassies while reading the names of those killed in Palestine. They called on their governments to stop selling arms to Israel.
In the US, large-scale protests took place in Washington DC, New York, Dallas, and Los Angeles. Activists demanded the Trump administration to halt Israel’s offensive and allow aid into Palestine. Many young students also organized sit-ins and teach-ins at universities.
In Asia, Latin America and Africa, demonstrations were also held in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Cape Town, and Buenos Aires. Protesters expressed solidarity with Gaza and condemned other countries’ double standard response to Israel’s human rights violations.
The new series of bombings follow the launching of Operation Gideon’s Chariots, an Israeli military plan aimed to ultimately occupy the entire Gaza Strip and confine Palestinian civilians to a few “evacuation centers” in the southern part of the enclave.
In the Philippines, the Moro-Christian Peoples Alliance (MCPA) joined the global call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
MCPA secretary general Amirah Lidasan said, “since breaking the ceasefire, the Zionist-Israel and its number one funder has shown no mercy to our Palestinian brothers and sisters. They play deaf while the list of martyrs and victims grows longer, and those still alive have nowhere safe to go.”
Lidasan called on the international community to continue urging their leaders to take action against the relentless attacks on the Palestinian people. “The liberation of one is the liberation of all, especially now in the face of gross violations against human rights, and we should not stop until Palestine is free,” Lidasan added.
“With Israel preventing aid from entering Gaza, they have also used hunger as another weapon against the Palestinians. Starving them out as they continue to rain bombs on refugee camps and hospitals. How is any of that humane?” Lidasan said.
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres described the situation of the Palestinians as “indescribable, extremely cruel, and inhumane.” Since Israel began its occupation of Gaza in October 2023, more than 53,000 have been killed and an estimated 121,000 Palestinians have been injured.
