60-day march for ancestral land, rights to land and water, culminates in Metro Manila

The 60-day Jubilee Walk Against Hunger, Poverty, and Injustice, launched by farmers, fisherfolk, and indigenous people from various provinces, culminated in Metro Manila. It began on March 13 in Zamboanga Sibugay and traveled over 4,000 kilometers to oppose the grabbing of land and water resources, which are their homes and sources of livelihood.

The march was grounded in the spirit of Jubilee Year 2025 as declared by the Catholic Church and former pope Pope Francis, with the theme “Pilgrims of Hope.” The march united communities, highlighted their issues, and brought these concerns from Mindanao to the Visayas and Luzon.

The march’s demands included stopping the Kaliwa Dam, which threatens indigenous lands and the environment. They also demanded returning the land in Bugsuk, Palawan to the indigenous people, farmers, and fisherfolk.

They demanded ending destructive mining in Caluya, Antique, which has displaced many communities and destroyed the environment. They also condemned the unjust Supreme Court decision allowing commercial fishing in the 15-kilometer municipal waters reserved for small and artisan fisherfolk.

On May 10, the closing of the march was held at the People Power Monument. Before this, students and organizations of Ateneo de Manila University welcomed them on May 8 in support of their struggle.

At the end of the march, the groups declared that they will continue to press the government to stop land grabbing, the implementation of destructive projects such as mining, and commercial fishing.
