ILPS urges solidarity for the Kenyan youth and people's struggle

,

The regional committee of the International League of People’s Struggle (ILPS) for Africa and West Asia urged all its members, friends and allies to support the struggle of the Kenyan people against the repression and human rights violations by the puppet Kenyan state.

“The Africa and West Asia Committee of the ILPS supports the determination and assertion of the Kenyan people on their collective economic rights and sovereignty,” the committee said. These rights are stated in the Algiers Universal Declaration of the Rights of People and in the country’s constitution itself.

The call for support was made amid the rise of the anti-imperialist and democratic movement in Kenya. Since June, Kenyan youth have launched a series of actions against US puppet president William Ruto’s Finance Bill, which will raise taxes on staple foods such as bread, sugar and oil. The state aims to raise $2.7 billion to pay off the country’s enormous debt, at the instigation of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

The majority of the people, especially the youth, rejected the proposal, since four out of every 10 Kenyans are unemployed.

Instead of heeding the people’s grievances, the Ruto regime responded with violence. As many as 50 protesters have been killed, 413 injured, 335 arrested and 59 abducted and missing. Gatherings and actions have also been prohibited in some places.

Ruto has already withdrawn the anti-people Finance Bill on June 26. He has also reshuffled his cabinet several times in response to criticism of his regime’s corruption and incompetence. However, protests and resistance continue in the country. and calls for his ouster has resounded.

“We call on all democratic forces in Kenya to ensure that the voice of the people prevails and condemn the government’s repression and its flagrant violation of human rights,” the ILPS-Africa and West Asia Regional Committee said.
