The Resist North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Coalition and the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) condemned NATO for putting up an office in Amman, Jordan. NATO announced the opening of such office at its recently concluded annual gathering in Washington, DC this July.

“This shows Jordan’s deeper involvement within NATO and is a sign of NATO enacting its global dominance further,” Resist NATO Coalition said. The group asserted Jordan will serve as NATO’s newest military base in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The NATO office in the country further reinforces US imperialist control and supremacy over Jordan. On January 31, 2021, Jordan signed a “Defense Cooperation Agreement” with the US, which became official in March 2021, allowing the movement of US forces and military equipment into Jordan. It is allegedly for “military and counter-terrorism training.”

In NATO’s own statement, it acknowledged Jordan’s “significant role as a beacon of stability in both regional and global contexts, and as a long-time champion in fighting transnational threats, including terrorism and violent extremism.”

This only means “the US will use Jordan as a line of defense and a puppet state for its Zionist settler colonial project and protection for its imperialist interests in the Middle East,” the Resist NATO Coalition said. This will further intensify Zionist Israel’s attack against Palestinians and its genocidal campaign in Gaza, which has been raging for over nine 9 months.

It said that the US will also attempt to prevent the rising wave of mass uprising throughout the MENA region especially in the face of the widespread support for the struggle of the Palestinian people. “The possibility of a war in the region will push the US to further expand its resources to protect [Israel],” the group said.

Amid all this, the Resist NATO Coalition and ILPS called to further strengthen support for the Palestinians and demand a ceasefire in Gaza. “To liberate Palestine, we must resist the expansion of NATO’s military presence that protects and secures Zionism and imperialism in the Middle East and North Africa,” the coalition insisted.

Jordan has the longest border with occupied Palestine, where the Zionist Israel built its state. It is also adjacent to Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
