Paltry wages offered to nurses in Cavite draw criticism
Filipino Nurses United secretary general Alyn Andamo condemned the Cavite Municipal Hospital for its Facebook post that offered job order positions to nurses for a salary of ₱15,000 per month and nursing attendants for a salary of ₱8,000 per month.
“Why are the wages offered to nurses this low?” Andamo said. She stated that this proves many nurses employed by the government in the provinces do not receive Salary Grade (SG) 15. “Can the DOH blame the nurses for leaving the country?” she added.
The hospital’s post also drew denouncement from the public, who said the wages were unreasonable and even lower than the minimum salary for ordinary workers in Southern Tagalog.
According to the Philippine Nursing Law, nurses working in public hospitals should receive SG 15 or the equivalent of ₱38,000 to ₱40,000 per month. The Magna Carta of Public Health Workers states that if the local government cannot afford to pay this, the national government will cover the shortfall.
Cavite Municipal Hospital absolved itself of the issue and explained that the Provincial Government of Cavite manages the hiring and salary payments, not the hospital.
